The storm had been raging for three days. Lieutenant Maya Chen of the US Navy guided her destroyer through the darkness, searching for a downed pilot. The radio was dead, the compass spinning. Then, through the rain, she saw a light-steady, warm, impossibly bright.

"Follow the light," she ordered.

The destroyer turned, battling the waves. The light led them to a rocky outcrop, where an old lighthouse stood. Its beam cut through the storm, guiding them to safety.

As they approached, the sea calmed. The rain stopped. Maya climbed onto the rocks, her crew behind her.

Inside the lighthouse, an old woman tended the flame. Her back was to them, her hands steady.

"Welcome," she said without turning. "I've been waiting for you."

"Who are you?" Maya asked.

The woman turned. Her eyes were ancient, her uniform from a war long past.

"I am the keeper," she said. "This lighthouse guides lost ships-not to harbor, but through time. The pilot you seek is in the year 1942."

Maya stared. "How do we get back?"

The keeper pointed to the flame. "Step into the light. It will return you to your proper time. But the pilot-they will survive the war. They will live a long life. They will remember the strange destroyer that appeared from nowhere and led them home."

Maya looked at her crew, at the impossible choice.

"Do it," her helmsman said. "We're ready."

One by one, they stepped into the flame. Maya was last. The light engulfed her, warm and bright.

When she opened her eyes, she was on her destroyer, the sea calm, the sun rising. The pilot was safe, floating in a raft.

She never told anyone what she had seen. But on quiet nights, when storms rolled in, she looked toward the horizon and imagined the lighthouse, still burning, still guiding the lost.

And she wondered if, somewhere in time, the keeper was still waiting.

The lighthouse never appeared again. But Maya never stopped being grateful for the woman who had guided her home.

She visited the coordinates every year, dropping flowers into the water.

"Thank you," she whispered.

And sometimes, just sometimes, she thought she saw a light-steady, warm, impossibly bright.

A reminder that some guardians never rest.
